A quick update on what we've been up to. today we were honored to be invited to train 50+ personal trainers at the AFAA APEX convention.
Here are a few pics of the training.

Thanks to the entire group for coming out.

Here are some of our crazy trainers that helped make this event happen.

IMG_0020.JPG1. Spend money to make money. Too many trainers have the idea that they’ll spend money on their training abilities, clothes, equipment, etc. when they make more money. Wrong answer! Think for a moment: why should the client hire you? What makes you unique when compared to other personal trainers? If you won’t spend money on yourself, why should the client spend money on you? If you don’t think you’re worth it, why should they?

2. Emphasize education. The more you know, the better you can help the client. Waiting until after you get successful to get a better fitness education is a terrible idea. Do engineers wait until after they are successful to learn how to be better engineers? What about doctors? They don’t. Staying educated is part of the process, NOT the result.

3. Realize that you’re in a business. We’re here to make money and support our families. We don’t give away our services for free or act like what we do is worth nothing. Instead, give high quality service to the client and get paid for it.

4. Selling is part of the process. You must sell your services to the client. How you look, how you act, what fitness tools you specialize in, what results you’ve gotten with past clients, how you talk to clients, etc. all are part of the selling process. You’re selling your services (or maybe not) every day whether you realize it or not. What message are you sending to clients everyday – hire me now or don’t hire me at all?

5. No one is going to do it for you. Your manager isn’t going to find clients for you. Your friends aren’t going to find clients for you. They don’t even know or probably care what you do all day anyway. And your own clients probably won’t help you find other clients if you don’t ask them to. Take control of your fitness career by being proactive. Get off your butt!

Since passing my level 1 certification last week, we've started training folks using Crossfit methods at Formosa Fitness during private and semi-private sessions of 2-3 people. We stress coaching and doing the movements safely and correctly -- something you can't do on your own. We also have lots of equipment for Crossfit workouts in our gym -- full set of real bumpers (only gym in Taiwan with those!), rings, full set of kettlebells, etc.

So if doing Crossfit in Taiwan or Taipei is something you're looking for, contact us today and get started.

We interupt our normal prgramming for this special bulletin: I'm attending the Crossfit cert in April! Very excited about this and can't wait to meet the guys at Crossfit Asia. I've been following them on the web since they first opened and they're an inspiration for all of us here in Asia. They were the first box to open and have been at it for quite a while now so I'm sure they have lots to teach me. I plan on learning everything I can and working hard to prepare for the challenge between now and then. BTW, expect group workouts at Formosa Fitness to get harder. :)

We had our fifth Kettlebell Taiwan certification yesterday and it was a unique experience in many ways. For one, it was the first that didn't require prior training with the kettlebell. We wanted to intorduce the kettlebell to coaches that had never used it before and I was nervous about that, but it went well. Second, we didn't have any of our famous 5-6 minute tests in this one because the trainers had never seen the kettlebell before. I was a bit like a fish out of water with this one because I love the tests, but as it turned out, it was a good thing we didn't have them. Third, I was as sick as a dog with the flu all day. I managed to pull off the cert even though it wasn't my best performance. It was good for me to perform feeling so bad because now I know I can do it. Check out some photos from the cert.

These are deck squats. They increase hip flexibility like a can opener opens cans.

Tricep extensions with the kettlebell increases the ability to lockout the kettlebell overhead.

I was really worried that the new trainers wouldn't get the swing right but they all did. Good job!!!

Our first female trainer! I was so proud of her. She swung, squated, and cleaned the 24kg! Congratulations and thanks for the hard work!

I guess Santa didn't have room for these in the sleigh. Sigh. Maybe later.

    black bar.jpg

This is the Texas black bar. It's really nice and not chrome plated like our regular bars. I've used one before and loved it.

    squat rack.jpg

Would love to have more squat racks for the gym. But maybe only one of these would fit. I would love to have the cable attachment, too.

    trap bar.jpg

Trap bar for deadlifts. Great tool but impossible to get here. Keep dreaming, I guess. :)

Sorry for the slow posting. I thought I'd be able to do more this week but preparing for the holidays while still keeping the gym open is taking all my time. We wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas from all of us here at Formosa Fitness!

This is a gym tour clip I did today. We are NOT your usual gym! Unconventional workouts, unconventional results!

Yep, it was a busy weekend. I taught the functional fitness seminar then this one on using the power clubs. What a great day! I REALLY enjoyed teaching this seminar. I originally intended it to be aimed at trainers who wanted to teach the movements to older folks but the progressions i showed turned out to be quite the workout. They could be used for most anyone to get a good workout.

The clubs are turning out to be quite a nice addition to training. They are harder to learn and more exotic than the kettlebell. They certainly require more practice than other implements and what we did today was just the tip of the iceberg. Clubs are more like martial arts -- they take time to master and the later moves build on these basics.

If this appeals to you, stay tuned because we will be offereing this training again!

I taught the basic functional fitness movements of squat, lunge, deadlift, push and pull to a great bunch of men and women. Thanks for coming and we look forward to doing it again!

I have a new post on my old Formosa Neijia blog. I wrote it because my time and experience in the martial arts continues to come up and I thought I'd address my personal evolution a bit. I hope that answers some questions.

I will continue blogging at Kettlebell Taipei and Personal Trainer Taipei until further notice. I'm interested in trying some new things out for at least a little while. Whether or not I return here will decided in the future. You know me, I'm always changing things around. :) Thanks for your patience. I'm very much a work in progress and the process requires that I try new things and make mistakes along the way. Hope you can understand.

I'll be blogging for a while over at two new miniblogs: Kettlebell Taipei and Personal Trainer Taipei. There are a few things I want to address there instead of here and then we'll look at the where my blogs are headed. Check them out.

This is very easy to do! The STX provides a great home work out at a fraction of the cost of other stability and suspension trainers. to order, drop me an email at formosafitness "at" pixnet.net

They're only NT$3000 while supplies last. Thanks!

Here it is! This is a sneak peek at one of our first hard core fitness classes. The clients are just learning the movements here so it's a work in progress -- but then so is everything else we do here because we never stop learning and growing!

Join a class and see what it's all about!

This is the STX -- suspension trainer extreme -- and it goes on sale today. We worked hard with our factory to produce a safe, effective, yet low-cost suspension/stability trainer. We made several changes and went through many samples until we had what we wanted.

As you can see from these photos, the stitching is high quality as are the parts we used.

    IMG_0291.JPG

This is a gym in a bag! You get the handles, two extender straps, and two door anchors with each order.

    IMG_0284.JPG

No more separate door anchors to pay for!

    IMG_0303.JPG

And it all fits conveniently in it's own bag.

Similar suspension trainers now cost NT$8600 in Taiwan but you can get the STX for only NT$3000!

Please call 0912287898 or email formosafitness "at" pixnet.net to place your order. Thank you!

We have a hard core fitness class for those brave enough to try it. Current times are 7am M-W-F. Working out in the morning is a great idea. You devote all your energy to it first thing in the morning and then go about your day. This approach is MUCH more productive than evening workouts!

We limited to the first five people that join us so act today to resverve your spot! Thanks!
